I describe myself as a sculptor and filmmaker but often my work feels like painting. I like to work with a wide range of materials and processes, including ceramics, cardboard, 16mm film and carpet tufting. I often feel quite restless in the studio, always looking for new methods and materials to fold in; one material will give me an idea of how to use another one differently. This switching and combining is the metabolic force in my practice. Everything I make is rooted in the strong, generative relationship I have with images: illuminated manuscripts, Byzantine mosaics, film posters, playing cards etc. These different streams of imagery are bound up with the way I think through ideas.
