My paintings begin with ventures into remote landscapes. I gather photographic material while walking and, in my studio, create works of varying scale.
Recent projects have channeled these painterly experiences into wider themes. I have become interested in the legacy of events buried in the community consciousness. I'm intrigued by the capacity of paintings to hold these memories - becoming vessels to which we might return.
I have found it peculiar how the landscape and histories can distill into paintings and how walking, photographing and drawing, has become a process of gathering, not just physical material, but an atmosphere that lies in the place.
Growing up in the Welsh Borders the landscape and locality has personal resonance yet it is my endeavour to explore wider themes. Through international residencies and studies I have sought parallels within other cultures and landscapes.
