Porcelain and wood 23 x 10 x 19 cm 2025 Eleanor Havsteen-Franklin's work is inspired by botanical and biological forms; central to her inquiry is the exploration of hybridity, relational entanglement and symbiosis between the human and non-human species. In her work, intimate, ambiguous forms hint at these entanglements: the cellular folds into the geological; the bodily connects to the environmental. Working with clay allows for the exploration of tactile visceral surfaces and the transformations through glazing and firing involve small chemical events that echo broader molecular, temporal and material shifts. An important part of her practice, whether working with clay, printmaking or drawing, is rooted in material intuition where forms emerge through a dialogue between gesture, chance, and transformation, rather than through predetermined outcomes. Collaborations with scientists and cutting edge research on fungi and plant immunity have inspired her work and understanding of the microscopic relationship between plants and the tactile nature of living surfaces and plant physiology.
