Egg tempera, Acrylic Oil on Linen on Panel
80 x 60 x 7 cm
2025
I have loved Nolan's work for 40 years. The sense of place, narrative and joyful image making, loving paint’s substance. All a lesson and inspiration to me. I used to worry that one day painting would be an exercise in moving stuff, smearing colour on cloth. that it would lose its potency. Yet that is exactly how I feel now and it does not worry me. I don't think painting is magical or alchemy, unless I want to. I don't think it will bring a dead cat back to life, although it might produce a picture of a choir of deceased cats welcoming you at St Peters gate. It is matter. It is touched by human hands, but it is odd, this embodied (externalised and fixed) image starting a conversation about things we cannot say yet, or never contained in words. It is both strangely accessible and dauntingly complex.
