Liz Clifford uses daily walking as the starting point for her work. She aims for a sustainable practice through the use of salvaged materials, many of which are found littering the English countryside - the detritus of agri-business, transport, recreation and family life. She makes sculptural assemblages that respond to human interventions in the landscape, from fly-tipping to the building of flood defences. She employs low-tech methods of construction such as knotting, binding and felting, referencing the ‘making do’ solutions that evolve with circumstances and are associated with ‘fixing things’ in both domestic and agricultural contexts. As well as addressing concerns around pollution, soil depletion and biodiversity loss, the work also explores assemblage as a post-human hybrid concept; one of adaptation, evolution and survival. She is an elected member of The Royal Society of Sculptors and an Associate Artist at Chapel Arts Studios in Andover.
