Melissa Cole’s practice is rooted in the ancient craft of blacksmithing but engages in a more sculptural way embracing modern making methods to create dynamic work as a reaction to moving through the landscape around her. Her work evolves through remembered passage across a variety of landscapes, capturing the flow and rhythm of the typography and snatched shapes imprinted on her mind. The works make a connection to the ground in a delicate way; the body of the sculpture floating above. Melissa’s current landscape work is of a more intimate scale. Intentionally starting with a birds-eye view, these works focus on specialist craft techniques for measured making and are a development of previous sculptures concerned with flight paths and mapping of landscapes.
