My work is very much about the experience of living and working in the borderlands of the Welsh Marches, a diverse landscape combining Welsh and English influences with a distinctive geography of ridgeways, forested valleys, mountains and rivers. I spend a lot of time walking, observing and visually recording elements of this landscape. When I'm back in the studio I develop these observations through abstracted forms often defined by the dramatic light, black shapes, the darkness and contrast of the forests, accents of colour and the textural feel of this unique landscape. I work with a largely monochromatic palette in acrylic, charcoal and graphite building up multiple layers and then sanding, scoring and erasing to reveal or obscure something of the previous.
