My work is expressive, psychologically charged and includes a strong figurative element which looks at the connection between mind and body. Focused on personal experience while drawing in wide cultural observations and concepts, it examines the complex and ambiguous nature of human experience. Environment, objects, clothing and animals connect in layered narratives and point towards hidden aspects of ourselves; what we project consciously or unconsciously and what we withhold. Figures express both vulnerability and a determined, even defiant, resilience and draw us into the centre of an ongoing quest to unearth internal truth. Powerful expressive colour and marks are employed within the images as delicate stains and as thick impasto and these prompt an emotional response. Transparency affords access to subconscious understanding. Distortion and expressive line, along with abstract and symbolic elements make up a personal but universally resonant iconography, which has been honed over many years.
