I am a painter and Jungian analyst, with a special interest in alchemy, the outsider, and the emergence of the new, as part of the processes of creativity, healing, decolonisation and social change. I have frequently explored what it means to feel alien, or alienated , and am drawn to others who experience this. Being at the margins has advantages - particularly a sense of freedom to act and think outside the rules. The price is that the shadow-aspects of society are often projected on to those perceived as Other. At a time of backlash against trans and nonbinary people, my series ‘Pin Ups’ celebrates and explores transgender and non-binary expression, and my own non-binary identity. In paintings of people that I relate to and admire, I reference imagery found on social media platforms: using stills from videos, I select moments that convey a combination of vulnerability, power, and centredness.
