Sarah Jane Moon (b.1982, Wellington, New Zealand) is a British–New Zealand figurative painter based in London. Her work explores identity, gender, and the performative aspects of self, using vibrant colour, symbolic objects, and energetic gestural mark-making to create psychologically charged portraits. Moon studied Art History and Theory in New Zealand and Australia before training in painting at The Heatherley School of Fine Art, Chelsea, where she now occasionally teaches, alongside the Art Academy, London. She has exhibited widely, including at the National Portrait Gallery, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, and the New Zealand Portrait Gallery. Her work was selected for the National Portrait Gallery’s Portrait Award in 2019 and 2020; her portrait of Peter Tatchell was acquired by the NPG in 2024, and her portrait of Georgina Beyer entered New Zealand’s national collection at the Alexander Turnbull Library in 2025. Moon is a recipient of the Madame F Queer Britain Art Award and the Rudolph Blume Foundation Award (2025). Her work is held in major public and private collections including the University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford, Soho House, and the James Wallace Trust. She is Chair of the Contemporary British Portrait Painters.
