Shirley Sharp - In my Head

£600.00

Jesmonite
15 x 25 x 19 cm
2025

I move between sculpture and painting allowing them to feed into each other. Using character as a means of distancing myself and at the same time searching for the character within. There are elements of the Absurd within ordinary everyday experiences and this shows in the work through a combination of serious and comic themes. Having concentrated on painting and drawing for many years I only took up sculpting during my MA in Fine art in 2018 in order to give a physical presence to the characters. So now I sketch in both clay and on paper and the process is very similar in both disciplines. I cannot imagine one without the other now. Sometimes sculpting directly from my pen sketches and then painting directly from the sculpture, so they each have equal importance. My thoughts come from human life, fiction, films and music mostly and constantly thinking through sketching.
